Getting There: There is no direct flight from the northeast to Tallahassee. We opted for a 2h 40m direct flight to Jacksonville, FL, then a two hour drive to Tallahassee. The other option is two separate flights with a layover, which always amounts to more travel time.
The drive from Jacksonville is a lot of nothing – just trees, fields, and billboards for things that offend my liberal Yankee sensibilities. We made one stop along the way to use the bathroom at a gas station, which my husband then informed me was in the town that houses the KKK headquarters. Tallahassee, a state capitol and educational center, is a liberal island in an ocean of redneck hellscapes.
Hotel: None. (We stayed with family.)
Highlights: Tallahassee is sprawling and beautiful, much in the way that New England is beautiful. Lots of pine trees, wooded areas, and small businesses. It also has every kind of chain store and restaurant you could ever dream of. We found a wonderful cafe called ___ which also happened to be downstairs from Lucy and Leo’s cupcakes.
Tips: Definitely make time for the parks! Tallahassee has some gorgeous green spaces
