Just a few miles past the north end of Hampton Beach is a much smaller beach that I prefer: Jenness State Beach. It’s long enough for a little walk but still small enough that I don’t worry about my daughter getting lost in a crowd or stepping on cigarette butts. Like most beaches north of Boston, the water is dark and ice cold and filled with brown seaweed. It’s also pretty rocky towards the top half of the beach. It’s not Florida, but it’ll do.
Season: April through October
Parking Fee: Row of 67 paved spaces with meters, $1 or $2 per hour depending on the season.
Restrooms: Yes. In-season there is a real bathroom.
Lifeguards: 10am – 4:45pm late May through late August
What’s Nearby: There’s a great little takeout window called the Beach Plum directly across the street where we always stop for an ice cream because it is SO good. Hampton Beach with all of its tacky excitement is a short drive south.
